Veneers are a great way to “makeover” your smile or to enhance the appearance of teeth. There are generally two materials used to create veneers which are composite resin and porcelain. Porcelain veneers are generally appropriate for cases involving teeth that are worn, dull, discolored, chipped, cracked, have uneven areas or to correct gaps. Porcelain veneers can be used to correct the appearance of just one tooth or to correct the appearance of many teeth. They are generally used in areas that are visible when you smile to create those winning smiles you see by celebrities, TV personalities, beauty queens, and you!

If you are unsure whether you will need one or many veneers to accomplish your smile goals your personal consultation with Dr. Radz will help you to determine how to reach your goals. Veneers are also one of the more expensive dental procedures so if there is a cheaper solution to your dental needs we will also notify you of that. It is important to remember that your dental plan will be based on your oral health needs as well as your aesthetic desires so Dr. Radz will be using his experience and knowledge based on these two factors. Patients should be open to other procedures if Dr. Radz recommends that they are better for their oral health and appearance goals.

Tooth decay occurs from the buildup of plaque acids on your teeth. After eating a meal or snack, bacteria in your mouth start working (they’re especially fond of meals that contain carbohydrates and sugars) and break down leftover particles of food, which produces acids. The acids then combine with debris in the mouth to form a sticky substance called plaque. Plaque tends to deposit on molars and near the gum line of teeth.

Plaque acids build up quickly, within 20 minutes after eating, and can be destructive to your dental health. Plaque continues to harbor these acids and is the leading cause of periodontal disease, or gum disease. “When acids are left on the teeth, they demineralize the teeth,” says Jolene R. Zirnheld, DMD, of the Louisville Center for Cosmetic Dentistry in Louisville, Kentucky. In other words, acids make the enamel of the tooth weaker. If the weakened tooth continues to decay, then a hole, called a tooth cavity, will form. If a cavity is left untreated, the tooth decay will continue, and the cavity will enlarge. An abscess, or infection, may develop, and eventually, the tooth can be destroyed.

There seems to be an ongoing debate about the health hazards of soft drinks, but do you know all the facts? We all know that water is a much healthier alternative for your mouth, but what other health problems do soft drinks cause? We found some interesting statistics on water vs. coke… check them out:

Water

75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated.

In 37% of Americans the thirst mechanism is so weak it is often mistaken for hunger.

Mild dehydration will slow your metabolism as much as 3%

Lack of water is the #1 trigger for daytime fatigue

Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.

A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math and difficulty focusing on the computer.

Drinking 5 glasses of water each day decreases your risk of colon cancer by 45% and can slash your risk of breast cancer by 79%.

Coke

In many states the highway patrol carries Coke in the trunk of their cars to remove the blood from the highway after a car accident.

You can put a t-bone steak in a bowl of Coke and it will be gone in two days.

You can clean your toilet by pouring a can of Coke into the toilet, let it sit for one hour and flush.

To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers rub the bumper with a piece of Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coke.

Coke will clean the corrosion on a car battery.

Coke can also loosen a rusted bolt by soaking a cloth in Coke and apply it to the rusted bolt for several minutes.

To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of Coke into the load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains. It will also clean road haze from your windshield.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION:

The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. It will dissolve a nail in about four days. Phosphoric acid also leaches calcium from bones and is a major contributor to the rising increase of osteoporosis.

To carry Coca-Cola syrup (the concentrate) the commercial trucks must use Hazardous Material Warning Cards reserved for highly corrosive materials.

Dr. Radz did not perform the research to compile this data. Have you tested any of these Coke theories? If so, post your results on our Facebook wall!

Broccoli – keeps anti-acid film from forming on teeth, thus preventing dental erosion.

Cheese – helps neutralize bacteria in the mouth, preventing tooth decay.

Ginger – has anti inflammatory properties that help maintain the tissues in your mouth.

Lemon – acts as a natural teeth whitening agent and also contains Vitamin C, which is important for overall health.

Pineapple – helps people produce more saliva, creating a healthier oral environment.

Sea Salt – helps strengthen teeth by fusing them with the right minerals.

Sesame Seeds – these act as a natural scrubbing agent, which reduces plaque. They are also extremely Calcium rich, which is important for maintaining teeth.

Scientists in Ireland have been tackling an oral bacteria that is related to causing the formation of blood clots and endocarditis, an inflammation of the inside lining of the heart chambers and heart valves. The bacteria, streptococcus gordonii, is a normal inhabitant of the mouth and contributes to plaque that forms on the surface of teeth. When these bacteria enter into the blood stream through bleeding gums they can create health issues such as blood clots that lead to growth on the heart valves as well as inflammation of the blood vessels that can block the blood supply to the heart or brain.

The scientists are looking for ways to develop new drugs that combat the blood clots from forming and the ensuing infective endocarditis. Dr. Helen Peterson, who has presented the health issue and is working towards a solution, is quoted as saying “What our work clearly shows is how important it is to keep your mouth healthy through regular brushing and flossing, to keep these bacteria in check.”

Here at Cosmetic Dentistry of Colorado we are hoping the scientists make great strides and use this information to inform our patients of the benefits of good oral hygiene and prevention. Regular dental cleanings, good at-home hygiene, and a healthy diet are keys to the avoidance of dental related health problems.

In the event you are suffering from gum disease or dental health issues related to your gums we offer non-surgical gum disease treatments to remove plaque and tartar from the gum line and to remove bacterial toxins. The science behind gum disease continues to show its relation to other health problems as noted above in the Irish study. Blood clotting can be a very serious health issue and can threaten your life. If you suffer from gum disease you deserve relief.

Dental cavities and tooth decay is one of the most common medical conditions experienced by Americans and the single most common disease of childhood.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 19 percent of children have untreated cavities and approximately 41 percent of children have decay in their “baby teeth.” This is a health statistic that has not improved since the 1970s and recent studies are indicting a new rise in cavities in children.

Cavities are the result of gradual tooth decay caused by the build-up of plaque and breakdown of protective enamel. Bacteria are normally present in the mouth; however, as they digest sugar and starches they produce acid, which weakens the enamel. Additionally, the bacteria and its acid mixes with food debris and saliva to form a sticky biofilm called plaque. Plaque that is not removed hardens into tarter, which can result in inflammation and gingivitis. The acid within the plaque can continue to dissolve the enamel and eventually cause pits and holes, called cavities.

Dr. Radz and Cosmetic Dentistry of Denver are pleased to announce our newest treatment for patients who suffer from sleep apnea and snoring. Our sleep apnea therapy is used to help treat obstructive sleep apnea, the most common form of sleep apnea that causes the airway to become blocked during sleep. Dr. Radz recently completed coursework on sleep apnea treatment and now adds it to our long list of restorative and cosmetic dental treatments.

Facts About Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea affects over 18 million Americans

Sleep apnea sufferers can cease breathing as many as 30 times per night

Experts estimate that 10 million Americans have sleep apnea but have not been diagnosed

Men suffer from sleep apnea more than women

Sleep apnea patients are also likely to suffer from high blood pressure

People with sleep apnea are three times as likely to be involved in a car accident

First Steps to Sleep Apnea Treatment

Sleep apnea treatment can start at home in addition to sleep apnea therapy in Denver from Dr. Radz. For starters, know the dangers of sleep apnea such as obesity. Obese people are much more likely to suffer from sleep apnea and snoring than those who maintain a healthy weight. Excess weight in the neck can make it more difficult for the breathing muscles in the neck to operate. In addition to weight loss, alcohol and tobacco use can contribute to sleep apnea as they affect air passages. For a conservative approach to sleep apnea, try to sleep on your side instead of your back to promote better breathing and limit the weight on your breathing passages.

For conservative sleep apnea therapy in the Denver area consult our office and see if you are a candidate for a sleep apnea and snoring mouthpiece. These CPAP alternatives are effective and popular amongst patients who have issues with the CPAP machine.

Their study, the first to assess the prevalence of oral HPV infection in the U.S. population, may help health experts understand why rates of oropharyngeal cancer — a type of head and neck cancer — have skyrocketed in recent years, increasing 225 percent between 1988 and 2004.
